Black History Month is a celebration of Black history and culture, and all the incredible
accomplishments the African American community has achieved. Throughout elementary school, most children learn about social justice activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. These influential figures are so important to our history, but there are many other African Americans who broke down barriers and made a difference throughout history. Malcolm Little: The boy Who Grew Up To Become Malcom X
The story of Malcolm X’s childhood is an amazing one that helps children learn individuality and resilience, while gaining knowledge on a strong civil rights movement leader. This award-winning book, written by Carole Boston Weatherford, takes children along on Harriet Tubman’s courageous and spiritual journey through the Underground Railroad, which earned her the nickname “Moses.” This book is also filled with powerful illustrations by bestselling artist Kadir Nelson, that really help pull the story together.
The Power of Her Pen: The Story of Groundbreaking Journalist Ethel L. Payne
As the only Black female journalist during her time, Ethel L. Payne broke down barriers and paved the way for those who came after her. She was never afraid to ask the difficult questions, and bring light to the issues that mattered. This is an amazing story that helps children see what following your passions and standing up for what you believe is right can really do.
